Okay, let's get one thing straight. It is not okay to accidentally mow down teenage boys and then drive away just because you're late to a game of golf. 68-year old Nobumasa Nakayama was arrested today for doing exactly that, and I think it's time for all of us to learn a little lesson from this.
Being on time is very important in Japanese culture. It costs railway companies tens of thousands of yen for every minute that a train is late. Employers start serial calling their workers as soon as the clock strikes 9:01AM. There is a lot of pressure to be on time, and often very little room for error.
So I don't want to leave you with this story thinking: What an asshole Mr. Nakayama is! But rather: What made him think that being late to a golf game would be worse than neglecting a potentially life-threatening accident he just caused?
Plus, according to Mr. Nakayama's golf buddies, the suspect arrived on time but seemed distracted and didn't play that well anyway.
