A Saga University professor just invented a new system that lets people type just by looking at a computer screen.
Here's a brief recap of how this works:
1. Person looks at the computer screen, which displays a giant keyboard.
2. A small webcam-like device mounted on top of the screen determines the position of the eyes by using lighting and shadowing for guidance.
3. Once the eyes are located, the device determines what keys the person is looking at by tracking the pupils' positions.
4. Unlike its predecessors, this device doesn't require electrode patches or IR-camera-mounted goggles.
5. This probably won't work if you're cross-eyed, or if you're simultaneously checking your MySpace page. But it's great for disabled or very lazy people who can neither move or talk.
Full story here.
This technology sounds very similar to this eye tracking technology used for usability studies.
