Remember that story about the guy who murdered and chopped up his sister while his parents were out visiting relatives? So the cops had collected a bunch of evidence--including her sweatshirt, the sneakers she was wearing when she died, and the samurai sword he attacked her with--and put it in a cardboard box next to the chief investigator's desk at the Yoyogi Police Station. Four days after the brutal murder on January 3rd, the items were discovered to be missing. They later figured out that someone had mistaken the box for garbage and threw it out.
What do the cops have to say about this?
They were items that were very important in proving the crime, and this is extremely regrettable. We will strengthen our guidance and education so that this sort of incident is completely eliminated.
Yes, please. Even though in this instance it was pretty obvious who did it, that doesn't mean you can chuck the evidence along with your empty can of coffee.

Oh my god, I can't believe that actually happened. I hate to think about the prosecution trying to make any claims now that their evidence to put this guy away is in some waste facility. Hopefully they will still be able to convict him, because I would hate to see this guy walk back out onto the streets of Tokyo - even though I don't live there.
