This video tells the wonderful history of "buruma." From the late 1800s until the mid-1990s, buruma were worn by every Japanese school kid during gym class. They're basically super short shorts, named after an American 19th century feminist named Amelia Bloomer. They were mainstreamed in Japan after the national women's volleyball team won the Gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
This video is narrated by a buruma in the first person, who somewhat angrily explains that the "burusera" craze in the mid-90s--that is, porn-loving dirty old men who dug the look of school girls in short shorts--had such a strong backlash that burumas disappeared from standardized school wear.
I'm all for skirts & loose socks. All those years of Catholic school with Nun's whipping me with a ruler while I flirted with the girls has conditioned me quite well. ;)
