Looks like Tokyo and San Francisco had similarly warm beach weather days this weekend. Yesterday, I went to Baker Beach, a SF favorite that spans the segment west of the Golden Gate Bridge, and it looked like Waikiki except with a really pale, slightly out of shape crowd. People were sprawled out on the sand with rainbow-striped umbrellas and frisbees and dogs and babies and stereos playing bad beach music.
Not in Japan. As you can see in the above photo of a beach in Kanagawa, the sand was packed full of people, but they're not lounging around--they're digging out and collecting shellfish. Hard-working and working hard, even on Golden Week. It actually looks a lot more fun than frisbee.

That's crazy! I wonder if they are getting any, since there are so many other people collecting. I better make a mental note to not visit Japan during Golden Week, so that I dont' interfere with the natives' vacation!

I'm almost certain they did. See, the authority managing the beach ships in a truckload of shellfish and buries them the night before predicted busy days so that people will find them, be happy, and come back next time.
The trouble is, a lot of them used to come from North Korea; and since relations are currently clamless between the two, I wonder how much it's costing to keep the beachgoers happy...
