Japan's not the only country where kids suffer from incessant bullying--but while many of these incidents in Japan end in suicide, a former bullying victim in Australia just proved that being beat up at school could have quite a different outcome. Benjamin Cox, an 18 year old in New South Wales who claims to have been bullied at school since he was five years old, became an instant millionaire when he won a Supreme Court case against his school, which is anticipated to pay out over A$1 million.
I hope this case scares schools not just in Australia but worldwide to amp up their anti-violence measures. A bullying hotline was opened in Japan in earlier this year, which tells me that the Japanese government is trying not to turn a blind eye to the problem. We'll see what the school-related suicide count ends up being this year.
