I freak out every time I misplace my keys, but reading this story made me really reevaluate the link between loss and panic. A 54-year old motorcyclist in Hamamatsu (Shizuoka) was riding along the highway when his leg fell off. Apparently, the dude hit a median strip along the toll road he was cruising, but he didn't stop and kept on riding until two kilometers later, when he arrived at an intersection. That's when he looked down and realized that his leg was severed 10cm below the knee. So the guy went back to the scene of the accident, picked up his leg, and went to the hospital. Luckily he had some guy go back with him and call an ambulance. They think he didn't feel his leg fall off because the pain literally made him numb.
Wow.
