I managed to snap a great shot of these guys in Harajuku carrying huge Gucci bags. Two of the other guys they were with also had matching handbags. Note the pink bear keychain of the guy on the left. I know a lot of foreigners are perplexed by the abundance of handbag-toting boys in Japan. They aren't metrosexual per se, it's just the norm here. Japanese men were metro even before the term was invented. To carry a brand name handbag is just icing on the cake. You must be wondering why these bags are so huge. I did too, until my metro friend Fernando pointed out that they probably carry their hairdryers in there. It takes one to know one. (Emily Co)
Also, in Tokyo, it's such a commuter city, you NEED a good bag when you're about town. Unlike most places in the US where they mock guys for carrying the "man-purse", those hand bags, satchels, and even the dreaded fanny packs are still used and sold and are common in Tokyo. I resisted for a long time but I finally gave in and got a nice Porter. It's fantastic :)

That's because REAL men in the US of A either carries:
1. A hiking backpack because they are a backpack tourist
2. a duffle bag because they are going to the gym
3. We don't need to carry all that junks just to make sure we look "pretty"

"Japanese" handbags...
are smarter than a duffel or rucksack
Actually fits nice between the body/trunk and arm when you have the straps around your shoulder. the bigger the better, who likes a bag packed to it's breakage point...
but I guess people wont until theyve tried it. In the meanwhile they just turn to dizzin' the 'trend' instead.
However... load it up with a laptop, textbooks, notes, dictionary... then you might as well get a regular appointment with your physio
