Life Magazine has a great collection of robot art from Japan in the 1950s. Space travel was becoming a hot topic, science fiction was picking up steam, and toy companies were making all kinds of robot and space age-themed trinkets. Here are a few examples, with more at the Life web site.

I had some kind of robot thing that shot our sparks when I was younger. (A long time ago) I thought it was pretty awesome. I think it walked too and shot sparks out of somewhere. Hmm...now I think I remember that I had my brother look into it and it burned his eye. Yeah, I don't remember that toy much. Mom must've grabbed it.
