Ramen geek reviews over 4000 instant noodle packs

Diary1002

I posted this on Boing Boing earlier this week:

i-ramen.net is an amazingly meticulous web site that chronicles one man's daily consumption of different kinds of instant noodles since 1997. It appears from the way they're numbered that he is now on his 4,308th bowl. For each new type of instant noodle, he creates a thorough chart that includes a full ingredients list; comments on texture, flavor, quantity, and price; and a starred rating.

The first question that popped into my head while browsing his site was: I wonder how his health is! And the second: How many flavors of instant ramen can there possibly be? Looking back at his archives, though, I see that at the end of 1998, just over a year after starting this instant noodle journey, he had reached 227 flavors of ramen. His more recent reviews include flavors from Korea, Thailand, India, and beyond. Given his international reach and commitment to ramen, I suppose 4,000+ may be entirely possible. (I didn't read every single review, so I can't say for sure whether there are duplicates.)

ANA to have women-only toilets on international flights

Starting in March, ANA planes will have toilets designated as women-only on most international flights. Apparently, they've been getting a lot of requests. I'm not sure how I feel about this — maybe subconsciously there's a part of me that is a little bit relieved when a woman exits the plane toilet, and not a man. Maybe because in my experience men tend to do things like drip pee on the floor or leave a couple of stray hairs behind on the raised toilet seat as a present. However, women on average take a much longer time, and I could see this causing some major crowding problems in the aisles.

Mao Asada v. Kim Yu-Na in the figure skating short program

200px-Mao_Asada_2008_World_ChampionshipsWow. Did you see Kim Yu-Na and Mao Asada compete tonight in the Winter Olympics? They're both so good! Asada skated first; her performance was flawless and she was the only woman to do a triple axel, but Kim kicked her butt, scoring 78.50 points — a world record — to a James Bond number. Personally I thought the fingers-pointed-as-a-gun finish was kind of cheesy and found Asada to be the more elegant skater, but Kim really displayed a power and style that was unrivaled in the competition. Asada had 73.78 points.

The most touching performance was by Canada's Joannie Rochette. Her mom died just a few days ago, so she was competing while mourning — when she finished she broke down in tears, but skated her personal best and came in third.

Video: two super cute dogs you should know about

I can't get enough of watching these two dogs — one likes to sit on a ledge and the other smiles when his owner approaches him. He doesn't smile for anyone else! It's super cute.
