Some of the characters were actually "influenced" by Kurosawa's "The Hidden Fortress". The Criterion Collection DVD has George Lucas interviewed about the subject.
I wouldn't mess with the samurai-era Chewbacca. Scary.

'sfunny, just the other day it dawned on me that Obi Wan Kenobi and Yoda can be written perfectly in Hiragana:
