My friend Ichiru took a photo of this storefront signage wishing all customers and passersby a happy new year. It's supposed to be a little mochi decoration, but he points out--and I absolutely agree--that it looks a lot like poop.

That's not poop. It is 3 pieces of mochi (rice cake) stacked on top of each other with an orange on top. It is a custom decoration done at new years. You can google "mochi at new years" and see pictures of it.
Love your blog by the way. Reminds me of things that I miss (or have forgotten and then miss) from what I lived in Japan.
