The kanji to the left look very wrong.

That's because it's not kanji. It's Korean Hangul for "hapkido."

He didn't pay for the tattoo, he won it in a contest run by Sega.

I wonder why they didn't use Horitomo, from State of Grace as the tattoo artist, considering that he was the artist who designed all the tattoo work for the Yakuza games.
